CASCIACascia lies at about 90 km from Petrata castle. The town dates back to Roman times, althought there are no zrcheological sites owing to the devastation caused by the barbaric invasions and by the earthquakes that have often hit this area. But it’s period of greatest splendor is in the Middle Ages. Of great interest is The Basilica di Santa Rita, which was erected in 1937 on the ruins of the church where the saint died. It houses the mummified remains of the saint, kept in a silver and crystal urn.A very suggestive borgo (village/hamlet) is that of Roccaporena, a small area of the municipality of Cascia. This is where Santa Rita retired to pray and do penitence; charming walks will take you to the Garden of Miracles and the Rock of Prayer, places rich in spirituality and devotion. |
