SPOLETOSpoleto, at 51 km from Petrata Castle is one of the towns most worth seeing. Walking through a series of narrow streets you get to piazza del Duomo (the Cathedral) dedicated to the Assunta it was built in XII century, in the Romanic style, in the place where the ancient cathedral, destroyed by Barbarossa in 1155 had been. The façade is divided horizontally into three parts and is composed of a romanic doorway in the lower part, a splendid rose window and four smaller ones in the middle part and three ogival arcades in the upper part. The interior is on a latin cross design, with three naves and a large apse. It houses important works of art by Bernini, Pinturicchio, Fra’ Filippo Lippi. In the archives, located in the rectory there is an autograph by Saint Francis.Another impressive monument is the Tower that connects the Rocca to Monteluco, 80 m high, 230 m long and consisting of 10 arches made for the purpose of bringing water to the upper part of the town and creating viability with Monteluco. The Roman amphitheatre was built in the early years of the Empire and then hidden by medieval buildings until it was brought to light in 1954, in the orchestra it is still possible to see part of the ancient paving.
